TRANSMISSION RECORDING - MARY KIM TO KATHRYN JANEWAY

The following is a transcript of one of the final communications with the U.S.S. Voyager before the ship disappeared in the Badlands

It was a conversation between Mary Kim, the mother of the ships operations officer Harry Kim and Captain Janeway.

The transcript is included in this book with the kind permission of Starfleet Command and the Kim family.

RECORDING BEGINS

*Mary Kim:: Hello? Am I through to Captain Janeway?

Janeway: This is Janeway. I’m afraid we’re a little busy with our post-launch diagnostics right now. Is this urgent?

Mary Kim: My son has told me that you're going to be his Captain

Janeway, previously distracted, turns towards the screen. Now paying full attention

Janeway: Your son?

she can be seen glancing to the corner of the screen to check the transmission metadata

Janeway: Would that be Ensign Harry Kim?

Mary Kim: That’s correct. We’re very proud of him. He’s our only son, you know. I can’t describe to you how excited he’s been to serve on your new starship.

Janeway’s demeanour visibly softens, a smile tugs at her lips

Janeway: I selected him for this mission myself, his academy reports were very impressive. I think he’ll make a wonderful officer.

Mary Kim: That’s wonderful to hear. But you should know Starfleet isn’t his only passion. I hope you’ll also give him time to practice his music. He was in the Juilliard Youth Symphony and I don’t want him to get rusty while he’s away.

Janeways stoic expression fully breaks into a smile

Janeway: We expect it to be a busy few weeks, but he’ll have his off duty hours. We’ll be running a three shift rotation.

Mary Kim: I’m afraid I’m not quite sure what that means. But I’ll trust your word.

She pauses

Mary Kim: But on the note of his music, in his excitement to catch his transport he forgot to pack his clarinet. I’ve already spoken with the Federation Shipping Service and they can have it out on the next ship to Deep Space Nine. Is there enough time at your stop there to receive it for him? I would hate for him to be without it.

Janeway's smile fades

Janeway: I’m really sorry, I’m afraid there isn’t Mrs Kim. We’re only doing a brief stop over to pick up your son and the rest of the crew before we head to the Badlands. Then we won’t be back for a few weeks.

I’d recommend trying to send it closer to that time

Mary Kim: I understand, thank you for your time Captain and please, from one woman to another, take care of my son.

Janeway: I will.
